Bruce moves closer to Sunderland top job

According to BBC Radio 5 Live, Wigan have given Sunderland permission to talk with Steve Bruce. The former Birmingham City manager cost Wigan 3m when he joined them in 2007, and although no amount for compensation has been given yet, Wigan will be looking to get at least the 3m they paid for him.

With Ellis Short taking 100% control of the club, it will be hard to turn down such an offer with the possibility of a generous size transfer kitty.

On Monday, Gordon Strachan was strongly linked to the post after he resigned from Celtic, but it seems Bruce is in pole position.

Sunderland, who are looking for their third manager in as many years have also been linked with former England manger Steve McClaren, currently with FC Twente, and Croatia boss Slaven Bilic. Martin Jol had also been linked to the post, but has recently joined Dutch side Ajax.
