Benitez becomes a Birmingham player

Birmingham City have completed the transfer of striker Christian Benitez.

The Ecuador international has joined the Blues on a three-year contract from Santos Laguna for a club record fee which could rise to 7.7million.

The two clubs agreed the deal at the beginning of June but Benitez has now officially joined the Premier League new-boys after putting pen to paper at St Andrew's.

'Blues fought off competition from top European clubs to land the Ecuadorian frontman, who is seen by many as one of the hottest prospects in world football,' read a club statement.

The 23-year-old striker added on the club's official website: 'I am really happy to have signed for Birmingham City and am looking forward to playing for the Blues.

'I think it is the right time for Christian Benitez to take on the challenge of the Premier League and I will be giving everything to score as many goals as possible and share in good times with this club.'
