'If It's Football, It's Vital'

McLeish Helped Johnson By Taking Him Off

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish insists that he took Roger Johnson off on Saturday for his own good, making sure he was available for the Carling Cup final next week.

Johnson picked up a booking and it looked as though he was a little agitated so McLeish replaced the player four minutes later.

But that put Johnson in a worse mood, assistant manager Peter Grant spoke to him in an attempt to calm his mood after sticking his elbow into the wall of the dug-out.

'Roger got booked and I thought one mistimed tackle from him and he's looking at red, with disastrous consequences,' the Blues boss told the Mail.

'It was a good opportunity to take Roger off. It was 3-0. Perhaps if the scoreline had been tighter we would have gone along with him. But I felt it was the right thing to do.'

Good move, we couldn't have afforded to loose the likes of him in a final.
