Blues In Europa Action

Birmingham City are in Portugal tonight ready to take on Nacional in the first leg of the Europa play offs.

Chris Hughton will be looking for a good result to bring back for the home leg, but they must do it with something of a depleted side.

Jordon Mutch is one of the players who is out of the travelling squad, he has to wait on the results of test on the ankle that he injured when he went over on it in training on Tuesday.

He had an x-ray and its already known that he will be out of action for what Hughton describes as 'some period of time'. There are fears he may have broken a bone.

Hughton is also without strikers Cameron Jerome, Nikola Zigic and Marlon King, none have travelled to Madeira.

Defender Scott Dann has been included in the squad, whether he plays or not is anyone`s guess as he has been an unused sub so far this season.

Hughton told the club's official website: 'I will certainly be making some changes but not wholesale ones.

'We have got four games in two weeks and what we've got to do is try and utilise the players we've got over that period of time. Unfortunately for me the depth of the squad is not that big but I have to use the squad.'

Vital Ipswich editor here. Not sure whether to wish you luck for this game or wish for you to be knocked out so that your season isn't weighed down by a European campaign. Sad that your continental adventure has had to come in such circumstances; I remember when we were juggling Division One football with UEFA Cup qualifying back in 2002 and it didn't do us much good really.
