Clark Hits Back at Critics

Clark Hits Back at Critics

Lee Clark has felt inclined to defend his tactics after Birmingham seemed to lose control of a game they had an extra man in.

Clark substituted both Clayton Donaldson and Wes Thomas in favour of Lee Novak playing up front on his own. This left a three man midfield with two wide men to play higher up. What has been portrayed by the fans is that this left Blues with just one up front and with the team being too negative.

Blues were 1-0 up and Clark seemed to change it to try and influence the game. Birmingham did have chances to put the game beyond doubt and had failed to do so in the first half.

Brentford then scored from individual mistakes from Gleeson and Grounds, a difficult ball to Grounds and his mis-control gave it straight to the opposition.

Clark has said to the Birmingham Mail

"I fully understand the implications once you make a substitution and you get a goal against you

I was shouting at myself going home.

I didn`t do it to stop us being an attacking team or to be more negative.

When we work on that system I want the two wingers and the striker to play high. I am basically leaving three up the field but just spaced across the line.

You look around the country, I watched Sunderland play that way on Sunday, Brentford played that way against us.

Ultimately, if someone makes an individual error it doesn`t matter about the system. The pressure had already been building on us.

We got sloppy with our passing and players looked a little bit fatigued."

So with both Brentford and Birmingham using the same system and the Bee`s being a man down it leaves to debate just how they managed to build pressure against the Blues.

It could be concluded that where quantity loses to quality it is the skill exercised by the players that has had its influence on the result. Brentford`s players raised their game above and beyond Birmingham players who failed to meet a reasonable standard.

Combination of change that didn't work and we were already losing control.

Agreed Harry! But keeping the ball up the pitch means we keep the lead. Donaldson is brilliant at holding the ball up, Novak isn't.
