Birmingham Collapse at Bournemouth

Birmingham Collapse at Bournemouth

Despite a strong start from the visitors, Birmingham could not find a way to stop the inevitable onslaught from the Championship's best side in what ended up as a 4-2 defeat.

Birmingham were in dream land as much billed revenge seemed on the cards on 21 minutes. Clayton Donaldson opened the scoring with a brilliant chip over the keeper on 18 minutes.

The fun didn't stop there as David Cotterill fire the Blues into a 2-0 lead on 21' minutes. But a soft booking for David Davis was a sign of things to come as Blues saw the game taken away from them.

Bournemouth had flexed their muscle by half time by bringing the game back to all square before the break. Cook and Wilson had leveled things up for the Premier League hopefuls.

Much criticism has been leveled at Paul Robinson for his part in all of the goals yesterday. His afternoon got worse when he gave away a penalty which Kermorgant put away for 3-2. Daniel's was then on hand to put the game out of sight at 4-2.

That wasn't the end of the story though as Robinson was given his marching orders on 77 minutes, leaving Birmingham in the lurch. They held out for a 4-2 defeat.

I do not support the selection of Robinson, yes he has a value in terms of leadership and his role as the captain. But that is very much a secondary reason to selecting a player, what must come first is a players ability to do the job at hand and he falls short in that department.

Additionally, Kiernan has been solid enough to retain his position at the back. Plus, why would you bring in a player with few games under his belt against one of the top sides in the division?

The result itself is not surprising, the manner in which it happened is however disappointing. To lose a 2 goal lead is poor but bearable, to then go and let in another 2 is unacceptable.

Then again it is well worth making the point that this is a team that is top of the league and beat us 8-0 in the reverse fixture. Another point of note was that the home fans chose to jeer Demarai Gray as he made a substitute appearance, an odd approach to take regarding a player you are trying to sign.

Blues will now regroup and set their sites on a huge local derby against Wolverhampton Wanderers this Saturday.
