Caddis: Defender or Midfielder?

Caddis: Defender or Midfielder?

Caddis will always be the blue eyed boy at Birmingham City ever since his heroics at the Reebok enabled the Blues' to keep their Championship status. But where does he fit in, in terms of the team?

As a right back, he has the ability to play the simple ball; this art has been lost on many right backs after the evolutionary role played by Roberto Carlos. But Caddis goes back to basics; his passing and running is often what is expected of this position.

Despite this, his lack of pace and defensive ability is seen to be a weak point. He is easily beaten on the wing and this then leads to opportunist crosses which are dangerous for our defense.

Put him in midfield, and he has a line of 4 behind him to sweep up all of his defensive mistakes, like a metaphorical mop. But his problem is, he doesn't have the ability to compete in this region with the likes of Shinnie or Davis.

Players who have been playing in midfield, often have done so from being a young lad, and therefore have shaped their skill to fit with that position. They also have a greater extent of knowledge and time cannot be wasted teaching a player the ropes when a club has a high number of competent play makers.

Caddis is second choice in most areas of the pitch which makes him a cracking versatile player, however, I do not believe he is good enough in either position to be a starter. As the old joke goes, he should be left back... in the changing rooms.

But who's a better right back at the club? Spector? Have your say in the comments section.

I don't think there is a better right back at the club, Eardley hasn't done well here, Spector isn't great out there either and as you say there are way better midfielders at the club. He does a decent job where he is and I hope he remains there until we get a better player.

If Caddis is your best right back, surely we need a signing there? I agree, no one has owned that position at all.

Caddis has been a consistent performer there, IMO. A decent enough defender, good going forward and a leader on the pitch.

Caddis since moved back to RB has been solid and back to his best in the 2nd half of the season. Move him to midfield? Are you Lee Clark?

Mezz I don't think he should be in midfield, I was just comparing the positions he has played to find his best. I think his best is at right back but he still isn't a good right back.
