Opinion: Che Adams proved his worth with hattrick in cup win
Birmingham City played out a comfortable 5-1 win against League Two side Crawley Town in the opening round of the Carabao Cup this evening.
Che Adams opened his competitive account for the season with a fantastic hat-trick, with David Davis and substitute Robert Tesche also getting in on the act.
But it was the former Sheffield United man that stole the show in the first round in front of just under 8,000 fans that were at St.Andrew's.
Not only did Adams show just why the club brought him in last summer but he also showed that he is capable of playing up front on his own, albeit against lower opposition.
Manager Harry Redknapp praised the striker for his goal scoring touch after the game and categorically ruled out the possibility of him leaving this transfer window after reports emerged that Derby County had had a £3 million bid rejected for him.
With all the frustrations that are surrounding the clubs lack of transfer activity at the moment, Adams demonstrated that when needed, he is a very capable striker and that he can most definitely finish his chances when he is presented with them.
If I were to be super critical, I would suggest that he could, and probably should have had five goals against Harry Kewell's side but I am not going to take away the fact he found the back of the net on three occasions.
And it was a credit to him that he went off to a standing ovation in the second half.
Following his substitution, Blues lacked any real threat going forward and once again it is a credit to him because he was the main dangerman throughout the game and when he was taken off by Redknapp, Blues didn't look threatening at all.
Personally, I still feel like Redknapp is likely to play him just off a main striker this season, whether that be Clayton Donaldson, Lukas Jutkiewicz or somebody new, but it certainly hasn't dented his reputation by scoring three this evening.
Who knows, we may well see him up front on his own in the league sometime soon.
