Torino midfielder set to join Blues in club-record deal

Birmingham City look set to sign Torino midfielder Afriyie Acquah for a club record €9m fee, a source from Italy has told Vital Birmingham.

The 25-year-old has been linked with the club over the past couple of weeks and it now looks like Blues have agreed a deal for the Ghanaian international.

Harry Redknapp has moved quickly following the disappointment at being unable to secure a work permit for Ogenyi Onazi to sign, although a deal for Acquah was always on the cards.

The Blues boss confirmed after yesterday's defeat at Burton that he was set to travel to Italy over the weekend - in hope that he could secure the services of the Torino man.

Earlier today, Acquah followed the official Birmingham City Twitter account.

That's three times out of three that Burton have outplayed and out passed us, its a joke and nobody can argue with what Harry has said. Only problem is we need to get at least another six players in and this is just one and he is unproven in this league. Even his compatriot was out of his depth last night so lets hope this one can do better.

Having gone to the Ipswich,Bolton and Burton games,I have seen where our problems lie. Firstly we do have the problem at left back where Grounds suffers against any average attacker.Replacing him must be urgent. Ndoye is imo a liability and doesn't improve the team at all.Keifenbeld is a better player.Gardner and Davis will not improve as their careers have peaked. Donaldson and Juke playing together is farcical as neither has a nose for goal.Good players for a non ambitious club is their best shot. Lastly our new goalkeeper needs to lose weight with speed covering his entire area is slow. Like Redknapp I do but his time as a manager is surely spent. Fresh young managers with modern ideas is what is needed.Cruelly as it is,I feel we need that input. Quoting Zola was probably the last straw by a manager who really has seen much better days.

Sounds like a lot of money on one player. Call me sceptical but I think the deal will fail over personal terms or the like. Sully and Gold used to do exactly the same. We are linked to Pavlyuenchenko, Mido, Ghaly etc only for the deal to fail over wage demands. If it happens I'll happily eat humble pie and will take no pleasure in saying told you so if it doesn't.

Ijaz. Have spoken to a few decent sports writers about this player. Not known at all and price tag of 9 million euros is somewhat fanciful.More like 2 million down plus further 2 with add ons should he be successful. All in all, very unproven with nobody else vying for his services.
