Blues v Villa: take the point and move on

One match reporter wrote- 'You couldn't fit a chop stick between the two teams'.

And while Blues could have won yesterday's second city derby, they could also easily have lost it. So in that respect, a point can't be sniffed at.

With a bit more composure, Jota could have been the hero. With a suggestion more delicacy, Cheikh Ndoye could have been the hero. In the end, that award probably goes to Tomasz Kuszczak.

If you can't win a game, make sure you don't lose it. The Pole in goal, despite not being overworked, made two outstanding saves just as Villa seemed in the ascendancy to keep the game goalless.

At St. Andrews, Blues are becoming a solid, if not spectacular, team. Three consecutive clean sheets in front of their own fans is evidence of this - but their problems lie in the final third where they've only scored eight goals in 14 Championship outings.

If we learnt anything from yesterday's second city derby, it's: 1) cardboard clappers are a waste of time and 2) Aston Villa are not 11 points and 15 league places better than Blues.

Steve Cotterill is slowly moulding his team into an organised unit. David Davis and Maikel Kieftenbeld were steady and Ndoye was menacing for an hour. The attacking onus fell to Che Adams, Jota and Isaac Vassell - who was forced off injured once again.

But the back four were rock solid and it was they, along with Kuszczak, who earned Blues what could well be a valuable point.

I agree, Steve Bruce also played his part yesterday, he could see we were building some momentum and the decision to replace Snodgrass for Jedinak got them over the line just we had them on the ropes. The key thing here was a performance and mentally this result will do loads for the team, Roberts showing his form of last year and Grounds showing why he is still our best LB. However it's all for nothing if we don't actually kick start our season from here and push on away from the bottom 3. We've got some good squad depth now, this should help us through the next 2 games, with us having 3 games in 7 days. If we can pick up 4 points from Brentforf and Barnsely then I think it'll go down as a very good week.

There isn't a word in the English dictionary that can describe our woeful lack of scoring goals. With Vassell now out again-surely it is time to play our £40000 a week player.Gallagher simply must play alongside Adams and Jota with Maghoma ready to step in. Yes a point was ok yesterday but oh for a centre forward who could have made up the extra two points.Villa would have been buried if a Hatton or a Francis had been around now but we must plod on with what we have.Jukey,Gallagher must be given game time also with early substitutions should the Adams,Jota pairings stutter. Brentford score at times for fun but defensively they are not cleaver.!which should be the perfect point for us to bombard them from the first minute.

As soon as I saw the clapper on my seat I said to the guy next to me you know these are gonna get thrown on the pitch. Whoever thought it was a good idea needs shooting. Lol. I thought we edged it overall. The lack of goals is worrying. 8 goals from 14 games is pretty pathetic. The players need to show the same level of performance versus Brentford and Barnsley. Its easy to raise your game in a white hot derby atmosphere. We need to show a greater level of consistency and get a few points on the board asap.

Quite right Ijaz we need points on the board.Free flowing football will never be us so grinding out a win from anywhere is vital.Formations and tactics sounds good and looks good at times-but reality s this squad doesn't score goals with or without the likes of Adams,Vassell,Maghoma etc. Gallagher may be the key now with him playing wide right where he was such a revelation with Blackburn last season.Play him, back him and give him a decent run of games.
