VAR Introduction Gathers Pace

VAR Introduction Gathers Pace

With tonight's FA Cup clash between Brighton and Crystal Palace seeing Video Assistant Referee technology get used for the first time in England in a competitive club match, it has now been confirmed that the technology will also feature in both League Cup semi finals between Chelsea and Arsenal as well as the EFL Cup Final itself at Wembley Stadium.

It however won't be in use for the semi final clash between Manchester City and Bristol City.

Having agreed to a two year trial back in 2016 by the International Football Association Board, VAR has in many ways been fast tracked this year based on the original schedule but for fans who aren't aware, the system 'can' be used in four match changing situations.

Goals, penalty/no penalty decisions, straight red cards and cases of mistaken identity.

We have seen it in use in England previously where the national side faced Germany back in November but the referee didn't have an opportunity to call upon its use.

It was first used in the Club World Cup back in December 2016 and has been tested in the 2017 Confederations Cup and domestic competition in both Germany and Italy.

Successful trials in this year's Cup competitions could potentially hasten it's arrival to the Premier League and Championship levels at least for next season.
