Blues out of Carling Cup

Southampton gained revenge in the Carling Cup against Birmingham last night when they knocked the Blues out of the competition, avenging an opening day defeat.

Lee Holmes was back on target to grab his second of the competition when he opened the scoring with a strike from the edge of the box after 17 minutes.

And that`s the way it stayed until three minutes before full time when Adam Lallana netted Saints` second.

It could have been worse for Birmingham when Holmes struck the bar and then hit the rebound against the post.

Blues responded with a few speculative efforts but were always second best with Saints always looking the most likely to strike again.
