King Power Stadium
24th August 2013: 3pm
Blues put together a late fightback in the game at the King Power Stadium, but they ran out of time and the match ended 3-2 to the home side.
Leicester went for Blues right from the off and there had to be a smart save from Darren Randolph to stop De Laet giving the Foxes an early lead.
But his brave actions led to him needing treatment and the game was held up for some length of time before he could carry on.
And when the game resumed, it was not long before Blues were in front when the home side failed to deal with a cross from Shane Ferguson and Green was on hand to fire the ball home from close range to claim his first goal for the club.
Nigel Pearson was not impressed and the Leicester side could sense this and piled on the pressure for Birmingham to deal with, but the home side wasted their chances in front of goal. Matt James fired over when he should have hit the target, and efforts from Jeff Schlupp and Danny Drinkwater were no better.
Schlupp then smashed in a shot that went well wide while Drinkwater could not keep his next chance low enough and that went over the bar. And as the first half drew to a close, King and Wood both missed a chance apiece that should really have put the Foxes level.
Two changes were made t half time by Pearson with Anthony Knockeart and Lloyd Dyer coming on for the ineffective Drinkwater and Wood.
And then it was more of the same story, with Birmingham soaking up pressure from the home side. Knockeart went close with a shot but hit the side netting and then Randolph made a good save from an effort by Nugent.
Then totally against the run of play in the 66th minute, Kasper Schmeichel had to rescue the home side when he made a fine save from a Neal Eardley free kick.
Then in the 78th minute, Leicester got the breakthrough they were looking for when Dyer made a good run down the left and Vardy fired in a low shot from the edge of the box.
Blues heads dropped and four minutes later they were behind when King got on the end of a pass from Nugent and finished well.
Then in stoppage time, Eardley brought down Dyer and Nugent made it 3-1 from the penalty spot.
But even though the home side had dominated for much of the game, there was still time for late substitute Chris Burke to grab a goal back and keep the score respectable.
