Novak Takes The Points From Blackpool

1 - 2

Bloomfield Road

22 Feb 2014

Attendance: 14,628

Lee Novak struck twice to give Birmingham City a deserved win at Bloomfield Road on Saturday and also kept Blackpool on their poor run of games without a win.

Richard Keogh had Blues fans worrying that they might have been heading for another defeat, but Novak calmed the nerves after 63 minutes with an equaliser and then made sure of Blues second league win of the year when he added another to his tally, although City were helped by the sending off of Jack Robinson.

Blues could have been in front after just two minutes when hotwire Novak found Federico Macheda, but the Italian miskicked with the goal at his mercy.

And the man on loan from Manchester United should have scored again just two minutes later but this time he headed the ball over the bar when he should have really hit the target.

At the other end there was also chances being wasted, Faris Haroun had a great opportunity to put Blackpool in front, but he fired in his shot to high and again the ball went over the bar.

Then Keogh went close after being set up by Haroun, but the striker fired wide of the upright.

Then Kirk Broadfoot forced Darren Randolph into a superb save, pushing his goal bound header over the bar.

But Randolph was powerless to do anything about Keogh's shot into the corner of the net after the ball broke to him from a corner.

Early in the second half Blues had a chance to get back on level terms when substitute Nikola Zigic set Burke through but Matt Gilks in the Blackpool goal was up to the job of stopping the winger.

Zigic then tried to chip the keeper but only managed to give Gilks an easy catch, but the Blackpool keeper was beaten when Zigic knocked the ball down for Novak who lashed a shot to the keepers left from the edge of the box and the two sides were on level terms again.

Blackpool were then reduced to 10 men after 75 minutes, Robinson was shown a straight red card after bringing down Jordon Ibe when he was clean through on goal, Ibe then tested Gilks with a shot on target soon after but he saved easily.

Blues pressure eventually paid off when Novak got on the end of a cross from Emyr Huws and headed home to make it 2-1, much to the joy of the travelling fans.

Blackpool went close again as the game came to a close, but Blues held on and took the three points.

Great day and I even brought back a stuffed toy for my kid from one of the shops, a stuffed warthog, but she doesn't like it much.
