Blues Battle For Pride and Point

Birmingham
3 - 3
Burnley

St Andrews

Wednesday 12 March, 2014

Attendance: 16,695

Referee:

No one is quite sure what to make of last nights draw with Burnley, we know the northern side aren't happy with it. The Blues faithful certainly loved the battle and here is how it unfolded.

Burnley scored first with a cross from Ross Wallace into the Blues box that caused Spector to produce a sceptical header back towards his own goal to allow Dean Marney to score the easiest goal he`ll get all season. It`s a really poor header and another defensive leak really letting the Blues down again.

Blues hit back in the second half, Paul Robinson proving he still has some 'go` in those old legs with a huge kick up field into the penalty area. Lee Novak was alert enough to flick on the ball to Macheda who completes a simple finish. The Italian had only been on the pitch a few minutes when he delighted St Andrews.

Burnley`s second goal is a terrific towering header from Duff. However the defensive marking is anything but tight as the freekick is swung in. Birmingham had been level for just 3 minutes which was hugely disappointing.

The home side continued forward though, on loan midfielder Huws dispatched a left footed volley into the bottom corner as the home crowd erupted. It really it a terrific hit and well controlled by the young man. Do go and have a look for it on the Birmingham City YouTube channel which I will link at the end of the article.

Just when you thought that would be it for a point Burnley scored again, initially a corner is sent clear but Burnley retain possession and attack before Birmingham reorganise themselves. This meant there was too much space out on the left and winger bursts into the box and plays it to the near post, where Sam Vokes finishes very well into the roof of the net.

Tom Adeyemi must take credit for battling in midfield to give Blues the advanced position that allowed them to equalise. After winning the ball back Adeyemi lays it off to Novak who plays Blackett into a crossing position. The ball in was good and Macheda again with a brilliant header, well deserving of grabbing some points.

Blues fought on in what turned out to be a night of heightened emotions. Manager Lee Clark kicking the advertising boards after the third equaliser went in for his side. Clearly an emotionally draining experiencing watching your team pegged back three times to then hold on in there and return you a point.

Fans have welcome Lee Clark`s passion on Twitter, YouTube and Facebook. The fan base appreciative of a manager feeling the pressures and pains this blue family have felt for 3 long years. Usually I am not a fan of managers acting with such reckless lapses of professionalism, but in this case I wouldn`t quite call it that. Lee Clark has had to rebuild his team mid-season, ensure a shoe-string budget and constantly field questions he simply doesn`t have the answers too. Regardless of the poor defending, Clark and all of the players/staff deserve their credit for a point well earned against a great 2nd placed Burnley

Macheda scored the goals, Novak played parts in all of them, Adeyemi battled and Huws popped up with a wonder goal. Honestly you guys can choose your man of the match, but it really doesn't matter this week does it?
