Blues Unlucky To Draw

Birmingham City U21's
1 - 1
Leeds United U21's

Wast Hills.

25th August 2014, 15:00pm.

Attendance: Unknown.

Referee:

Birmingham City were unlucky not to score a late winner due to the vast amount of pressure they applied to the Leeds United back four at Wast Hills a week or so ago. With a massive array of experience on show for Birmingham, expectation was high and they definitely put in a performance that warranted the three points. Instead, a draw was the outcome.

The game started tentatively, with neither side really showing their attacking prowess that we have come to expect from these two teams. The defences were certainly on top, in what turned out to be a largely uneventful first half.

Twenty seven minutes into the game, the first real chance occurred, from the right boot of the visitor`s; Luke Parkin. His eighteen yard effort narrowly missed Preston`s upright. This seemed to kick the visitors into action; Reece Brown`s effort crossed the line, only to be ruled out for a foul on the Leeds United goalkeeper, Cairns.

Half time at Wast Hills ended with the score at 0-0.

Four minutes into the second half, that deadlock should have been broken. Reece Brown, who had a magnificent game, played a beautiful ball to the former Celtic striker Denny Johnstone, only for him to blaze over from a mere six yards from the visitors goal.

Two minutes after that, Leeds United made their first change. Stokes made way for Mulhern. Alan Thompson also made his first change. Soloman replaced Pattison. Leeds United raised their tempo and within minutes was rewarded. On the fifty seven minute mark, Parkin was set clean through on goal and scored with a clinical finish, 1-0.

Alan Thompson made his second change on sixty eight minutes. Cogley entered the game for Adams. Leeds United six minutes later made their second change. The visitor`s captain, Phillips, came off for Purver.

Hancox, in the seventy fifth minute, sent in a great cross to Solomon. The ball ended up in the crowd as the shot fizzed wide from a tight angle. The final Blues sub was made in the seventy seventh minute. Lee left the pitch to be replaced by Armstrong. One minute later, Blues threatened again. Gray had a shot from outside the eighteen yard box, which stung the hands of Cairns.

Birmingham then found an equaliser. Gray`s corner powered home by the head of Johnstone.

The game ended 1-1. Both teams shared the points, but the way the Blues performed, three points would have been thoroughly deserved.
