'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Gaffers View: Rochdale Home (3-1)

Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish was pleased that his side had squeezed through to the third round of the Carling Cup, he was especially pleased with new signing Matt Derbyshire.

The striker, who is on a year`s long loan from his exile in Greece, grabbed his first goal for the club even though he was a little fortunate with the way the ball went in.

But they all count and what was more pleasing was how he kept finding good positions which always gave him a chance of adding more to his tally.

McLeish said: 'Matt got brighter as the game went on.

'You saw a glimpse of him when he got up the side from the first penetrating pass of the night and won the penalty.

'He started to look very dangerous in the second half in and around the box. He got his goal and linked up well.'
