Birmingham City have completed their seventh signing of the summer in the form of Mark Duffy. But can the sheer volume of the signings be a hindrance or a sign to go get some more badges for your Pony hat.
Well Lee Clark is busy signing players for more than one reason. Blues have released a large number of players deemed not good enough; also some key players have not been retained either through loans expiring or contracts coming to an end. And finally Birmingham had the small matter of a lumbering death battle at the end of last season that Clark will be eager to avoid next year.
Teams knowing each other and thus being able to perform at a team sport can become heavily distorted when teams sign as many as seven players in a transfer window. It can have an effect on the players already at the club, which would be hugely detrimental, and it can also take some time for the new guys to feel at home. Not to mention the 'home` feeling at St Andrews wasn`t always strong last time out.
Lee Clark is signing these players nice and early. A sign he probably knows these players will need a crackingly well bedded pre-season to get them playing well as a team. But the variables still remain right?
So how can this pre-season be used to its maximum affect? Well this is just an idea; Blues should play to win most if not all of their pre-season games. We`ve all been there, on the field with your slightly out of shape buddies and whilst losing you just want to call them a few unforgivables. But change that result for a win, even if it`s a dirty 1-0 smash and grab you feel closer than ever and far more forgiving of their mistakes (yes I`m writing as if I never make a mistake, because I don`t). I know pre-season isn`t always about results, but I suggest this one could well be and it would be to the teams benefit.
Here are Blues pre-season fixtures:
Tue 08 July - Cork City
Tue 15 July - Forest Green Rovers
Sat 19 July - Mansfield Town
Sat 26 July - Kidderminster Harriers
Tue 29 July - Notts County
Sat 02 July - Inverness Caledonian Thistle
Winnable right? What do you think about the above and do you share any of the same concern?
