Talking Point: Starting XI

Talking Point: Starting XI

The big day is here, and one of things we`re all thinking about is the starting XI Lee Clark will pick for the game at the Riverside.

It`s fair to say that the manager has a few options in most of the positions. Will he play 4-5-1 or 4-4-2?

Personally, because it`s a potentially tricky fixture, I`d like to see Clark play with a 4-5-1. Keep it tight and let`s see if we can come away with a positive result. Donaldson should be the focal point up top with Reece Brown playing just off him. Reece has been outstanding in pre-season and he deserves the chance to show the league what he`s made of. I feel as if he has the qualities to succeed in a number 10 role and with Donaldson holding the ball up bringing others into play, it could be a successful partnership.

For the back five I`d have Randolph, Eardley, Gunning, Robinson (If fit) & Jonathan Grounds. I`d be delighted if Robbo was fit for the game because I think we need that experienced head at the back. In midfield I`d have Caddis & Edgar as two sitting, with Cotterill & Novak providing the width. I`ve chosen Novak over Duffy because I think Novak is such an engine. He`ll do his bit tracking back and he can nick a goal or two from that wide left position. And as I`ve already mentioned, Reece Brown playing just off Clayton Donaldson.

I think the eleven I have chosen has the right blend of experience & energy and I just hope we put in a spirited performance that will make the fans proud. I`ve got faith in this squad. Clark has brought in some very shrewd signings over the summer and with the takeover still up in the air & limited resources at his disposal, he`s done a great job.

Let`s hope we can bring the three points back to St. Andrews and start the season in a positive fashion!

Think it will be a 4-2-3-1 (4-5-1 with two holding mids). I agree Donaldson will be up top, not sure who will be given the nod to go in just behind him to be honest. I'm expecting a Cotterill and Novak wide selection and would agree with how the back line will probably look!

Want Gray to be starting; hope Gleeson doesn't. And I've been impressed with grounds. You?

I'm reserving judgement on our defensive players until after today ;) - Not sure Clark has been all that convinced by Gleeson ?

I'm interested to see how we do when we introduce pace from the bench, I expect the game to open up a bit once the initial 'omg it's the first game' wears off in the second half

I did ponder about Gray, but i think he'll be introduced in the second half as Harry said. And Chris i think you're right about Gleeson, we haven't seen much of him so far. Clark probably already has his back four in mind for the season.

Think he only got a call up due to Adeyemis departure, I agree with both Chris and Jacob on Gleeson. But Gray has surely proven he's one of our best players?!
