We finally did it! We finally won a home game in the league to end a miserable sequence of poor performances and results at St.Andrews.

It was so important for Blues to get the win as soon as possible and the relief at the final whistle was…….well……it`s hard to even put into words the feeling as we all walked out of the ground. Smiling faces, springs in steps and confident talk about what is hopefully to come from Lee Clarks. And on top of the win we had a decent performance to go with it which is an added bonus.

The last two seasons I watched a manager on the touch line tearing his hair out because he would be spending the whole game pleading with his player to do the basic things that professional footballer shouldn`t need to asked to do. Track back, work hard pass and move……the simple necessities of football that are drilled into us all as children. Clark had players who were unwilling to do that kind of work………now he has.

Every player in a Blue shirt looked as though they wanted to play for Birmingham City Football Club, LC may have had players with more ability at his disposal in the last 24 months, the likes of Ravel, Burke, Lingard, Zigic, Macheda and so on, but this group of players are showing the signs of being a team, a team that are proud to say that they play for our club, a team that will hurt like we do when things go against us.

I should imagine that LC is quietly patting himself on the back with the players that he has been able to bring in with such a small budget over the summer and having seen both of David Davis` games so far I must admit that I myself have been impressed with the new lad considering he has only been at the club for 7 days.

Hall and Edgar looked solid and if they carry on as a unit like that then Blues will definitely improve on the 74 league goals conceded last season. Now we never want to concede goals but in the championship you have done well if you concede between 40-50 in a season if you are not a top top team. By conceding fewer it`s going to take so much pressure off Donaldson, Thomas and Novak. Clark recently touched on the fact that on many occasions last season Blues need to score 3 times in a game on numerous occasions just to salvage a point!!!

The one noticeable difference in us from the last two seasons is the energy and work rate of the front players. Donaldson, Thomas, Novak and Cotterill worked extremely hard to pressure the Brighton defenders, hurrying them in to distribution, chasing every ball and genuinely being a pain in the back side. Players don`t even have to be playing well to do this and it helps midfielders and defenders do their jobs even better. In the past Zigic and before him King were not interested and were incapable of doing this…… made it so easy for teams to put pressure on us and get in-between our midfield and defence because a deeper player was coming out to pressure the ball.

All we can ask is that the lads carry on with the the same attitude as they have shown so far and Blues fans will be happy with that.

See you Tuesday for the Ipswich game

I think you're right about the effort the players are putting in. Can we last the whole season on the front font? chasing everything down? what you reckon?
